Ataxia and Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)

Ataxia means unco-ordinated movements or the interruption of smooth movements. A person with ataxia and acquired brain injury (ABI) may look unsteady when walking and may appear to have a tremor as their movements can appear jerky or clumsy.

This differs from apraxia as the clumsiness is seen in all movement, both consciously initiated and spontaneous movement. This appearance of clumsiness comes from a disruption in the messages from the brain rather than a physical problem.
