My partner is 5 years post injury, and since the injury has made a good physical recovery but finds some day to day tasks difficult to do. Will this ever improve and would rehabilitation be of any benefit to them??

Answer

It is common for progress to slow down a number of years following a brain injury. This in no way implies that improvements cannot continue. A common myth states that after two years following a brain injury no further recovery is likely. This is based on the medical finding that much of the physical recovery occurs during this period. After this time, it is important to continue to support the person with brain injury to come to terms with, compensate for and adjust to life with a brain injury. In our experience, great changes can occur many years following a brain injury when these supports are in place. Some day to day tasks may require more support and help than before a brain injury but with the appropriate input it is possible that some of the current problems and difficulties can be sorted out. Such input can come in the form of a rehabilitation programme. Working with people on developing and pursuing shared goals appears to be the key to continued change. Another outcome of rehabilitation may be that certain environmental or situational changes are necessary. Finally, it is part of our ethos to attempt to involve families as much as possible. Your partner would necessarily be at the centre of rehabilitation; support, information and education for yourself may also be beneficial.
